Clouds + Fire- Being Led By God's Spirit

A beautiful horseback ride in Nicaragua

God’s creation always reflects His glory

Summer in Nicaragua

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Romans 1:20

God displayed his glory, his guidance and power through clouds and fire in the Old Testament.

He used clouds + fire in significant ways to demonstrate how the spirit of God protects, leads and empowers His people.  Before the Holy Spirit was given to us at Pentecost some of God’s people were anointed with His Spirit like Moses and Abraham.  His Spirit was also manifested by a pillar of Cloud and by Fire.

When Moses was called by God to lead His people out of bondage from slavery in Egypt,

God appeared to him in a burning bush- a consuming fire.  A burning bush - manifestation of God’s Spirit- spoke to Moses to set the captives free out of Egypt

Can you imagine?  A burning bush appeared out of nowhere- a consuming fire.. God is our consuming fire.  We carry God as believers- the passion and fury of God -

“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and aw, for our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 21:28

Moses, not feeling equipped, reluctantly agreed with the help of Aaron, Moses brother.  After the ten plagues that God sent the Egyptians, Moses and Aaron led the Isarelites, the captives, free to the journey of the promised land.

The only way Moses and Aaron knew the way to go was by the manifestation of the pillar of the cloud by day and fire by night.

"For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day and fire was in it by night in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.”  Ex. 40:38

"And whenever the cloud lifted from over the tent, after that the people of Israel set out, and in the place where the cloud sealed down, there the people of Israel camped.” Numbers 9:17

It was there in the wilderness at Mt. Sinai that God gave Moses the ten commandments.  After Moses spent forty days and nights on the mountain and received the ten commandments, he was radiant  from being in the presence of God.

"The Glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai and the cloud covered it six days and on the seventh day he called to Moses our of the midst of the cloud.”  Exodus 24:16

“The people of Israel would see the face of Moses that skin of Moses’ face was shining.  And Moses would put the veil over his face again , until he went to speak with him.”  Exodus 34:35

It is true of that same experience today.  We may not glow like Moses did, but when we  spend time and abide with God, we will radiate his beauty…

The people of Israel, the second generation of people in the wilderness, made it to the promise land.  After many Kings as rulers tried to lead His wayward people, God sent His son, Jesus, to redeem His people.  After his resurrection,  in his return to His Father, he was caught up in the clouds and promised us His Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit came upon His disciples at Pentecost.  His disciples gathering in one place,

“Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that departed and came to rest on each of them .. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”   Acts 2:2

At Pentecost, the Jewish disciples were given the Holy Spirit  Then later, The Gentiles beginning with Cornelious and his family received the Holy Spirit by the Word preached by the Apostle Peter.

Israel Trip -  Caesarea Maritima-  Cornelius and his family received the Holy Spirit

This was powerful for me to hear when I visited Israel a few years ago ..  To learn the story of Peter being called to go and share the gospel to the Gentiles..  A must read in Acts 10.

Just as God led His people with the Cloud + Fire by day and night.  We are now that tabernacle carrying His Spirit within us.  Thank you, Peter for following the Spirit of God to preach the good news to the Gentiles knowing the gospel was both for the Jew and Gentile.

The same spirit- that came to the disciples and then to the Genitles is available to us.

If we believe  in the Son of God that came and died giving us life eternal...  no longer a slave to sin, but a child of God we shall reign forever and ever with Him.

As a child of God we carry the Holy Spirit.  Take time daily to acknowledge God....know He is over you like a cloud of Protection.  In his Presence- filling our spirit with His word -renewing your spirit filling you- we will radiate the love and glow of our Savior.

His presence will ignite our spirit with Fire- giving us power to pursue the passion of God within us.... John the Baptist quoted in Matthew as he baptized people in the Jordon,

"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Matthew 3:11

We can walk in Power in the Presence of God.

As children of God-

Gaze up into the sky and see God’s cumulus clouds...be reminded of His protection and guidance in His spirit.... when you enjoy a summer bonfire or the fireworks coming up, know you have the power of God, a consuming fire residing in you.  For me, this summer I am relying on His guidance with beginning a business venture.. soon to be announced, leadership decisions at church and being filled with God's love to pour out to those I daily encounter.
