In today’s blog, I share about creating habits that will change your day. “Habits create a framework that God fills with His grace. They become the highway on which grace is delivered.” (Chip Ingram). With a plan, we become more intentional and have meaningful days, weeks and months ahead of us. Join me today as I share some of Chip’s insights on Habits. I will also share some of my photos of beautiful scenes from our recent beach trip. These scenes of God’s beauty inspired me as I read Chip Ingram’s book, Good to Great in God’s Eyes.
Sing Praise to God who gives us his lovingkindness each morning - Ever Be- Bethel Music
“Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.”
“..Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
After reading Chip Ingram’s book, Good to Great in God's Eyes I decided to put into practice some of the truths I gleaned from his book. Knowing at the end of the day that I have focused on God, wordshiped him in spirit and truth, I feel so close. We were made for worship as pastor Louie reminded me years ago. We will always worship something.. I want to make sure it is God at the end of the day and not anyone or anything else. So, while it isn’t performance or trying to obtain God’s favor.. I need structure and intentionality in my life. The disciplines that Chip offers in his book are key. He gives us ten practices that great Christians have in common, I am discussing one of the ten practices, habits. There are habits that we must identity first that are necesscary to break and begin habits that make our lives more beautiful.
One of the first questions Chip asked his readers is, What habit do you need to break?
Good to Great in God's Eyes Do you have a habit that you need to break that is keeping you from the person you want to be? Identify the habit you want to break, then choose one of the six good habits listed below that you want to develop. So, I decided my habit that needed to be broken and chose a habit to begin. I am giving myself 30 days to break the unwanted habit and develop the new habits with God’s daily help. These habits are not meant to be performance based in order to obtain God’s approval, but to allow God’s grace to transform our lives. “Godliness only comes through grace, but it takes great effort to apply grace fully to our lives.” , Chip Ingram, p. 273
Let me describe each habit that Chip offers us.
1.Put God first- Carving out regular time to meet with God- the principle of priority
2. Take out the trash- unholy attitudes and behaviors - the principle of transformation
3. Do your own dishes- the principle of responsibility-not blaming others or making excuses- live in performance based life-not understanding God’ grace
4. Write it down- the principle of clarity- using journals, calendars, godly counsel to help make goals, expressing feelings and issues
5. Do it now- the principle of inertia- learn to attack life not procrastinating
6. Turn it off- the principle of restoration-resting on the Sabbath
Have you identified a habit to break and one to begin?
Next, tell someone the habit you are breaking and the one you are beginning. Also, write down your habit to break and the one to begin to remind you daily.
I have shared my habit to break and my habits to develop with my husband. He sees me daily and can encourage me as well..
My habit to develop is (Putting God first) to sing to the Lord and memorize scripture daily. I have gone through cycles of praying more intentionally and I desire to know more songs and hymns to sing during the day!
Another habit I am developing is (Do it now)- Making business plans and executing the necessary steps.
So, I am beginning these habits Sunday the 27th and desire to celebrate development of these habits with God’s grace on June 27th. If we aren’t vulnerable to accountability and willing to effectuate change, then we aren’t growing. God desires to transform our lives daily. Share with a friend or your spouse your habit that you desire to break and the one you are developing.
My songs of worship today:
Ever Be - Bethel Music
“I therefore, prisoner for the Lord urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called with all humility and gentleness with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
The scripture that I am memorizing this week is -
“Finally Brethen, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Phil. 4:8
I have leaned from great Bible teachers to choose scriptures that help me overcome weaknesses and to fill my mind with God’s powerful truths.
My Do it now- habit for next week is to make business cards, yay.... as my plans develop I will share with you all about my business dream!
God will help us with our habits. Chip describes in his book that as we make our plans of breaking a bad habit and creating a new habit this will allow a highway for his grace to flood through us.
We want to keep changing. There will alway be habits to break and begin. Always transforming into His likeness..
In the evening, as the sun sets over your home... know that God is faithfully working in our lives, transforming us more and more into His image. Reflect on His faithfulness and His grace as it floods in, helping us with our habits. Thank him, give God credit for His help; and when we fail in exercising our habits, ask for his mercy and start again tomorrow. He loves us just the same....
"From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is to be praised!' Psalm 113:3
I recommend Chip's book Good to Great in God's Eyes to learn more of the practices to strengthen your walk with Jesus. His book encouraged me in my walk with Christ.
I hope you have a beautiful day and let's rejoice together at the end of June by faithfully walking in new habits.
