Lights On!

November 30, 2016

Oh, how we love all the beautiful lights at Christmas time.  The twinkling of the lights makes us so giddy and excited.  Lights are magical and draw us in.  How many of us just love to sit and admire all the lights shining on the ornaments of your tree at home?  I loved it as a child and love it just as much today!  It is not unusual for us to love lights.  Lights illuminate the darkness!  Jesus is the Light of the World,… stepping down into darkness to open our eyes to See..(Song lyrics by Tim Hughs-Here I am to Worship).

Again Jesus spoke to them saying,

“I am the light of the World.  Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of Life.”  John 8:12

Lights are illuminating everything here in festive Orlando.  We are here for a Christian conference, being equipped to be God’s children of the light.

“For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or the darkness.” I Thessalonians 5:5

Ponder this verse:

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”  Matthew 5:14-16

Wow! As believers we have the light in us…. the Holy Spirit… As David Platt might say..” Think about that.. we have Jesus in us…”

Another great verse for us to ponder,

“For God, who said, ‘let light shine out of darkness’, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.”  2 Corinthians 4:6-7

As we walk through the winter wonderlands at Magic Kingdom and Disney Springs, admiring the magical lights, I am reminded of the magical light in the sky two thousand plus years ago, the star of Bethlehem.  This brilliant star was shining in the field of the shepherds and the Wiseman followed the star to baby Jesus, the King of the Jews.

“After they (the Wiseman) had heard the King (Herod), they went on their way and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.  When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.”  Matthew 2:9-10

The shepherds and the Wisemen encountered the Light of the World..  Jesus, who humbly came to bring us true hope, eternal life; and give us His word, a light unto our path to go out and shine His light to all the ends of the world..

The beautiful lights of Christmas time are magical and inviting.  They can only be magical when they are turned on by the source.  We have the opporturnity to have our light  on and truly shine His love.  To shine effectively for our King, open our bibles, worship with beautiful music and engage in the people around you.  We have the light of the world dwelling in us to offer hope to the hopeless and lost this season.

We began the Advent season this past Sunday.  I want to prepare my heart to honor Jesus and bring light to those God leads me to.  First, we must clear out any sin that holds us back.

For me, this past week, it was control.  As women, we are cursed with the tendency to control since the fall in the garden.  I again relinquished control and asked God to be my everything, letting go of those I try to control;  surrendering to God.  I asked for forgiveness, both to God and my husband, and want only God to be in control.  We have to constantly ask God to weed out our sins so that His light can truly shine and not be blocked by shame or pride.
