It all begins in the Home

April 27, 2016

God prepares us for His purposes in the four corners of our home.  No matter what season of life we are in, God is preparing us for the next adventure.  God has placed us with our family or roommate or in singleness to mold us for His purposes.  For me and Mike, we are in a new season as empty nesters.  The children are grown and beginning their new journeys. God has given us each other to mature and grow in Christ.

I look back at the time raising my children as a training ground for my family.  As Mike and I taught our children about God and His truths; we grew in our walks with God.  We sought God’s counsel, love and forgiveness regularly.  Life gets messy with relationships, but that’s when real growth occurs.  We learn our strengths and weaknesses…. we learn humility and reconciliation.  After all, God sent His Son to pay the price for our sins.

God desires us to know the love He gives us; so we can give it away.  It is the practice of the daily routine with those closest to us that helps us work out our salvation.  To be a follower of Jesus, it is not a check the box type of relationship.  He wants a relationship with us day in and day out. I truly believe He gives us our family to mature and equip us for the works He has for us.

Let’s embrace the family, friends or roommates we have.  They have been placed in our lives to chip away; to help us become the diamonds God desires for us to be.  Yes, it is very humbling to see our weaknesses, but I encourage you to embrace your weaknesses and let God chisel away at the diamond you are to become..  You will become more beautiful in the process.

Christ's Example of Humility-

“So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

Philippians 2:1-8

Accepting and reflecting God’s transforming love brings joy to others around us. Less of us and more of God is attractive.  As we spend time with God, we need to ask Him to change our weaknesses, e.g. anger or impatience to love and patience. Pray Big.. He desires us to become Holy and more like Him.  If our strength is serving.. Ask God to show us how we can individually serve each of our family members, friends or roommate.  All the hard and beautiful times we share in our homes prepares us for His purposes.

My family has helped me become………

Less Subjective…….More Objective

Less Defensive……. More Offensive

A Better Listener

More loving and giving….. Depending on God’s power instead of performing

Mike and I are about move from the suburbs to the city. Big change! I look forward to leaning into the next season with the changes that God has made in me..  There will be new things that God reveals to me through my best friend and husband for 28 years.. I will embrace those and allow God to continue to mold me for His purposes. Not that the old ways of thinking or behaving won’t creep up, I recognize my old behaviors quicker.
